“Mom, what kind of kitten is sitting on the fence?” Vitalina asked. “This is someone else’s kitten, and he lives with the neighbors.”
“Why is he always sitting on the fence and meowing? Is he afraid of something?” the girl asked.
“No, he’s just a little kid,” Mom replied.
Vitalina’s mother knew that the neighbors had moved out a long time ago, and the kitten lives by itself in the yard. The woman brought him food when she went by for groceries. She didn’t want to take him home, as Vitalina had recently brought a puppy. The woman complained that her daughter was dragging the animals home all the time.
When Vitalina’s mom came home from work, she saw that the same kitten was lying in an embrace with a puppy. She wanted to make a scandal and scold her husband, who allowed Vitalina
to bring a kitten home. But she changed her mind after seeing how the kitten hugs the puppy and squints its eyes with tenderness.
The kitten missed the caress so much when he lived in the yard that when he was let into the house, he fell in love with a tiny puppy. And day and night the kitten was by his side, forgetting about Vitalina.
The puppy grew from a crumb into a rather large dog, nicknamed Doty. The kitten has matured. His
disproportionate body was rounded and his muzzle was no longer so ugly. But the owner still called him a Rat. And the owner loved and pampered him.
Doti went to live in the yard until the dead of winter. And the Rat could not imagine how to sleep alone without a dog, so he also went to live in the yard closer to him.
