When 42-year-old Jorge Antonio Gomez and 39-year-old Leyla Judith Romero found out in the fourth month of their pregnancy that they were expecting twins, they were surprised and at the same time full of emotions. In the 36th week of pregnancy, Leyla gave birth to two beautiful daughters, Catalina and Virginia. The girls were born with albinism. Albinism is a group of hereditary disorders in which the amount of melanin pigment is severely limited or completely absent.
The amount and type of melanin in the body determines the color of the skin, eyes and hair. Therefore, people with albinism have light skin, hair and eyes. After the birth of the twins, Jorge actively dispelled misconceptions about the disease. “People mistakenly think that albinism is a disability, so ridicule and fear arise when they see them,” he said.
Sharing more about Catalina and Virginia, the father of three explained that their condition does not pose a serious threat, but their skin must be protected from the sun’s rays and they must wear glasses to avoid damaging their eyes.
