Deputy sheriff, covers with his coat a dog that was hit by a car

Just a month ago, a Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputy was spotted squatting in a snow-covered ditch by the side of the highway. He wasn’t here to help some injured person out of a ditch. He was there to help the injured dog.

Sergeant Chris Howlett was with his partner Jason Baker when they received a report of an animal in distress. They might not have answered the call. After all, it was very cold, and there was more than a foot of snow on the ground.

Instead, the deputy and his partner quickly responded to the call, wanting to help the dog in any way they could.
When they got to the scene, the picture was heartbreaking. The dog was scared. She was suffering from severe pain from the injuries she sustained in the accident.

The car hit her with such force that the dog was thrown into a snow-covered ditch. However, after that, the driver left, leaving the dog to die.
Seeing how cold the poor dog was, Deputy Howlett took off his jacket and threw it on her.

While he was caring for the dog and trying to comfort her, Baker left to try to find the dog’s owners and let them know what had happened.

Someone passing by noticed that the deputy was knee-deep in snow and bent over the dog, trying to warm it.
Inspired by this, he pulled out his camera and quickly photographed the touching scene. The photo was then sent to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department and they decided to post it on their public Facebook page.

Thanks to law enforcement agencies, the dog was saved. They managed to find the owner of the dog. The dog had minor injuries and is doing well.
