Denise worked as a 911 call center operator. Her father was a police officer, and she always hoped she could follow in his footsteps, serving and protecting the community.
While she initially wanted a job on the force, she was never able to pass the academy’s physical training due to her disability. Denise had had her legs amputated a few years ago after a car accident.
After that, she was sure her dream would never come true. However, after her father convinced her to give the 911 response team a try, she finally found her place in law enforcement.
Denise’s job was demanding and definitely not for the faint-hearted. The problems she faced on a daily basis were quite traumatic. However, Denise felt she was born to do this and loved every second of her job.
One day, Denise received a strange call at work. She was used to getting prank calls every other day. And initially, this particular circumstance seemed to be exactly that. This wasn’t the first time someone had called to order a pizza, but there was something different.
“Hi, my name is Jane. Could I… Could you please bring 2 pizzas as soon as possible, please, I’m desperate!” said Jane in a frightened whisper.
“I’m sorry, ma’am, I think you have the wrong number. Goodbye,” Denise replied, about to hang up.
“No! Please don’t hang up!” insisted Jane, desperately.
“Ma’am, if this is a joke, I promise…,” Denise began before Jane interrupted her.
“No… I didn’t make a mistake. This is the pizza place and I desperately need 2 pizzas from you,” Jane said. Denise heard the panic in her voice and her sobbing as if she had been crying. She began to reflect on the situation.
“All right, ma’am. I have a feeling you may not be calling for pizza. I’m going to ask you a couple of questions. Just answer yes or no. Got it?” stated Denise calmly.
“Yes,” replied Jane.
“Are you in danger?” asked Denisse.
“Yes,” Jane replied.
“Don’t worry. I’m tracing your IP now. Is anyone else in the room?” asked Denise, typing quickly on the computer, trying to trace the location of the phone line from where the call was made.
“Yes. Please make it quick. My daughter and I are starving,” Jane said.
“Okay, so you and your daughter are in danger. Is this a domestic case?” asked Denise, opening her notepad and writing down what was going on.
“Yes. Please deliver the pizza as soon as possible,” replied Jane.
“It’s okay. Just stay calm, Jane. So, is it a man?” asked Denisse.
“Yes,” said Jane.
“Is he armed? Is he alone?” asked Denisse.
“Yes… And, yes… Please, we’re hungry,” Jane said quietly.
“It’s okay. Just hang in there, Jane. We’re almost done and we have your location. Does your house have a back entrance?” asked Denisse.
“No, just the front door,” Jane said. Then, suddenly, Denise heard a man yelling into the phone.
“Who are you talking to? Hang up!” the man shouted.
“I was buying pizza for…” replied Jane before a loud knock sounded on the phone and then she was cut off.
“Hello? Jane? Jane, are you still there?” asked Denise, but the call had dropped.
Fortunately, Denise had already located her address and had a team on the way to her house. The squad team arrived at the house shortly after Jane cut the phone off. They also arrived just in time.
They kicked in the door to find Jane’s husband drunk. Meanwhile, Jane and her daughter hid in the utility room, crying bitterly. The place was a mess, with beer bottles and pizza boxes everywhere.
The squad arrested the man on the spot and took Jane and her daughter to the police station. Denise always knew her job requirements and tried not to get too attached.
But something about this case made her want to investigate further. All she wanted to know was that Jane and her little girl were okay.
Fate crossed them, as Jane asked to speak with Denise, hoping to thank her personally. One of Denise’s detective friends handling Jane’s case approached the emergency operator and she scheduled a meeting with Jane.
Jane and Denise met for lunch and she brought her daughter, Matilda. Jane and Matilda were very grateful for Denise’s help. Denise was pleased that they were both safe.
Jane explained that things were not always this way with her husband. They had been married several years before. Matilda was Jane’s husband’s daughter and became hers after they were married. Denise learned that before he became a tyrant in their home, he was quite normal.
However, after he lost his job, he started drinking heavily and his behavior changed. He began to treat Jane and Matilda poorly. When things got terrible, Jane really saw Matilda as her own daughter and could not leave the relationship.
A week ago, he saw Jane talking to a man in the grocery store and completely lost control. He locked Jane and Matilda in the house and wouldn’t let them out.
Jane’s story touched Denise deeply and she promised to help in any way she could. In the end, she didn’t have to. Jane’s husband was arrested and the court denied him his parental rights. Jane took sole custody of Matilda and loved her as her own.
Jane and Matilda underwent therapy together and after a couple of months, with the help of their new friend, Denise, they were able to rebuild their lives again.
