Shelter dog on death row shivers and is afraid to walk

Every dog and cat deserves a loving family and a chance at life. Unfortunately, young and old pets are euthanized in overcrowded shelters due to lack of space.

There are millions of dogs and cats in shelters waiting for someone to come and pick them out. However, some of them are on a time clock, which the shelters call «death row.» Each of these animals has a certain date by which they must be adopted. Otherwise, the shelter will euthanize them.

Meet Mocha, a one-year-old pit bull mongrel who was placed in the Rowan County Animal Shelter in Salisbury, North Carolina. She was surrendered along with another dog by a heartless owner. The shelter has set a November 1 date for Mocha. And if she is not adopted by then, she will be euthanized.

The frightened puppy was shivering with fear in her cage as potential adopters passed by. She was covered in fleas and paralyzed with fear. One of the shelter volunteers, Albina Albia Chanel, wanted to show Mocha that not all people are bad. She was heartbroken at the condition Mocha was in, and she wanted to give her a chance to find a family.

«You know, every day we deal with cruelty and evil done by people. This sweet girl broke my heart. She’s a skeleton, covered in fleas, shaking all the time, and she won’t even get up to go for a walk. Sometimes I hate people so much. Hang in there, Mocha, baby girl. She has seen so much evil in just 1 year of her life,» Albina wrote.

She decided to write a letter from Mocha and post it on Facebook. It read:

«Dear people, while I sit here on death row, completely shattered, I hope my pups have at least a better life than I have. I sit here, so scared, waiting to be euthanized. You see, I’m only a year old. I haven’t had a good life at all…».

It went on to say:
«I shake so much in my booth that people just pass me by. I can’t help it, people haven’t been nice to me. I’m so thin, but I love to eat. I tried to be brave for my pictures today, but I couldn’t even get up. I tried, and I think the girls who were with me knew I was trying… I was brave enough to even take a treat afterwards.»

The heartbreaking letter ended by saying:
«I was surrendered to a shelter by my owner along with my friend… Please consider adopting me and giving me a chance at a good life. But please know that I may need some time to warm up because I am very scared. You can find me at kennel number 5.

Fortunately, one kind person heard about Mocha and came to the shelter to rescue her.
Albina wrote her own letter to Mocha after her rescue. She wrote:
«Dear Mocha, I sat with you and wrote a letter for the whole world to see. And they saw. Happy second chances, sweet girl. May you finally be loved and cared for forever.

Best wishes, my dear.
I love you and will remember you always.»

Thank you to those who saved Mocha. She is one of many on death row waiting for a loving home. Please consider adopting, as this is the only way to help end the deaths in shelters. Also, spay and neuter your pets. Adopt, not buy!
