In movies, gorillas are often shown as aggressive and unfriendly animals, but in fact they are not. If they are not constantly distracted from chewing grass, they will remain indifferent to everyone around them.
And gorillas, just like humans, are very reverent and affectionate to their babies.
At the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., photographers captured an amazing moment as a gorilla picks up and kisses its newborn baby for the first time.
This is the first birth of a gorilla at the zoo in nine years, so it was decided to take photos and film them to share this touching moment online.
In their tweet, zoo staff wrote:
“We are happy to share the news: the gorilla Kalaya gave birth to a male cub on April 15 at 6:25 p.m. His name is Moque, which means ‘youngest’ or ‘smallest’ in the Lingala language (Bantu language found in Congo, ed.).
Look at the care and love with which a mother holds her child
Then she gently kisses Moque, gently holding him in her arms and admiring him.
At the zoo, they say Kalaya is taking care of her cub, and they’re sure he’ll be fine.
“The birth of a baby is an important event not only for our zoo, but also for this endangered gorilla species,” says Meredith Bastian, curator of the primate section.
Then the baby will stay with his mother up to 5 years, despite the fact that independence is acquired much earlier.
