Ava’s married life with Peter was far from ideal. They had their ups and downs, but she still had a hard time letting go of him until one day she learned he was having an affair with another woman. It was almost midnight when Peter came home, all sweaty and tired, claiming he was at work on a project. Ava knew he wasn’t telling the truth because he had seemed distant for the past few weeks. There was certainly more to his story that he wanted to keep from his wife. No matter how strange it felt, Ava decided to follow him the next day. Her heart was racing and she questioned her decision, telling herself to put more trust in her husband’s words, but that was hard. Her gut told her something was going on and she wanted to be fully aware of it. When Peter stopped outside his office and stood in front of a door, Ava felt a knot in her stomach. A good-looking woman opened the door and hugged Peter. The two talked for a few minutes before he entered the house. Ava’s world shattered into a thousand pieces. Peter was having an affair, and that was the obvious answer to his indifference towards her over the past few weeks. Broken at heart, she reconsidered her marriage to this man she thought she knew. But at this point he felt like a stranger, like someone she had never met before. The obvious followed. Ava decided to confront Peter, and did so when he got home, again much later than usual. “Are you having an affair with this woman?” Ava asked, hoping to hear the truth that deep down inside was different than she suspected. But Peter didn’t even try to deny it. He said he had fallen in love with another woman.
What started as a one-time adventure became something deeper and more meaningful to him. He confessed that he had fallen in love with this other woman, but he said he loved Ava too. Unfortunately, he was quick to blame Ava for his affair, claiming she was cold and unsupportive. His words hit her like a knife. Ava had had enough. When he stopped speaking, she said, “Peter, I want a divorce.” But Peter was against that decision. He didn’t want to divorce Ava even though he was in love with someone else. He started yelling at her, threatening her, and telling her that he would never sign any divorce papers. That night, Ava couldn’t stop crying. She felt like there was no way out of the situation she was in. Living under the same roof with Peter while he had feelings for someone else was something she could never have imagined.
As she lay with her head on the pillow and tears rolling down her face, she heard Peter’s footsteps and the sound of a door closing. The next morning, he wasn’t in her bed. She searched the whole house, but Peter was gone. That’s when her eyes fell on the safe. Something urged her to open it; it was completely empty. The money, the jewelry, his passport. Everything was gone. Confused, she started the car and drove to Peter’s mother’s house. There, Martha stood at the door, blaming Ava for her son leaving the country. “If it hadn’t been because of you and your stupid demand for a divorce, none of this would have happened. You ruined your marriage and chased my son away,” Martha screamed. Ava couldn’t believe what she was hearing and asked Martha if she knew Peter was having an affair. “So?” Martha replied. “You should never have told my son you wanted a divorce, this is all your fault.” Finding that Martha couldn’t help her, Ava returned home. A strange silence greeted her. Everything in the house she had shared with Peter felt like it had never really been hers. She felt like a stranger in her own home. After a few days, Martha entered the basement. She told Ava that she would release her if she promised not to harm Peter in any way. All Ava wanted was to come home. She no longer cared about Peter and assured Martha that she would never tell anyone that he was still alive.
Martha was afraid that her son could get into trouble while Ava was in the house, so she released Ava.Ava ran to Peter’s car and started it. Martha ran after her, yelling for her to get out of the car and run to the nearest street, but Ava drove as fast as she could. Unfortunately, she was too weak to go far. While she was driving, she became ill and crashed into a tree. She lost consciousness, and the next thing she knew she was lying in a hospital bed where a police officer was waiting for her to wake up to question her about the accident and about Peter, who they were able to track down thanks to the license plate number. “He was living under a false identity. After the alleged plane crash, he took on a new name. We’re still working on putting all the pieces of the puzzle together,” Officer Daniels explained to Ava. She assured him that she really believed he died in the plane crash and told him everything she knew. Her testimony was the first step in putting Peter in prison. “The case is complex, but your testimony provides a solid foundation. George may face prison time, and Martha is also being investigated as an accomplice.” Ava felt relieved. She could finally start her life over and put the past behind her.
