The story of Bella the dog and Tara the elephant is by far one of the most moving we’ve ever seen…
Elephants are among the most intelligent animals in the world. However, their special charm lies not only in their ability to process information almost like humans, but also in their sociable nature. They love staying in a herd and developing the strangest relationships with animals of other species, no matter how different from their own.
At the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, USA, they have almost 1,000 hectares at their disposal, where these beautiful animals can explore and live freely. At the same time, sick and elderly women are given a safe environment where they can go about their daily lives, surrounded by experts who provide them with the care they need.
All the elephants are charming and get along very well with each other, but one of them has developed a very special friendship, the story of which has broken the hearts of his caregivers.
It’s about Bella, a dog, and Tara, an elephant, who quickly became inseparable.
Bella and Tara gave their caregivers wonderful moments of walking, playing, exploring, eating, drinking, and even cuddling.
Elephants communicate with each other using various sounds to warn of potential dangers and also to call their babies.
But one day, the poor elephant injured her back and could no longer walk. Therefore, they had to keep her in a special treatment center at the same animal sanctuary for three weeks.
The news completely destabilized Tara, the elephant. She had been their loyal adventure companion and suddenly she was alone, without anyone to play or sleep with.
Tara was lost in grief and refused to abandon her friend. Instead of wandering around their 1,000-acre habitat, Tara stayed outside the treatment center the entire time, waiting for Bella to come out and play again. After staying in the same place day after day, week after week, the 35-year-old elephant was finally reunited with her best friend, Bella. Tara didn’t know what else to do to show her friend Bella how much she missed her.
But suddenly, this beautiful story of true friendship was forever eclipsed. A coyote attacked Bella, a dog, and she sadly didn’t survive. Staff found her body, but strangely, there were no signs of blood, hair, or a fight nearby. And Tara, for her part, had blood on her body, so they immediately suspected it was her friend who found her injured and took her to another location to be rescued.
“The idea that she couldn’t leave that body and bring her home is just heartbreaking, but very inspiring,” said Rob Atkinson, CEO of the sanctuary.
But they had to watch Tara’s life fade.
“Certainly, his entire demeanor changed. She became more reserved, quieter, and depressed.”

The most heartbreaking part for me was seeing Tara the elephant standing in front of the grave and paying tribute to her deceased canine friend.
