In the Chinese city of Weifang, one unusual house has become a local landmark.
Hand-built by a 55-year-old man, it rises seven stories and is assembled from scrap materials: mud, broken bricks, clay, bamboo, branches and construction waste.

Locals have dubbed this building “the cheapest house in the world.” But there is a touching story behind this bizarre structure.
Hu Guangzhou was born into a family of farmers. He was the eldest son and from an early age he felt responsible for his younger brothers.

The family lived in poverty, and Hu, without finishing school, began to work at any part-time jobs, just to feed the family and educate his brothers.
During those difficult years, the three of them had a dream – to someday build a big house where they would live as a friendly family: with parents, wives and children.

He began to make his dream come true, building a house with his own hands. He worked without drawings, without experience, with what he found on the streets and dumps: branches, clay, stones, garbage, leftover building materials.

It took five years to build the foundation, three to erect the floors, and another two to reinforce and decorate. He built it alone.
But during this time, fate dealt a cruel blow. His brothers, who left for the city in search of a better life, never found it. One died in a car accident, the other died of illness.
When Hu was told of his brothers’ deaths, he refused to believe it.

“They will come back,” he said, “and they will have a home.”

The house is still standing, and no one is even thinking about tearing it down.
