How could anyone be so heartless as to hurt an innocent and defenseless creature? Malissa Sergent Lewis understood this like no one else when she discovered an incredible find one morning.
Malissa, an elementary school teacher, was driving to work on a side road when she suddenly noticed something on the side of the road. A black garbage bag was moving, but not from the wind — it seemed to be trying to walk!

Malissa, an elementary school teacher, was driving to work on a side road when she suddenly noticed something on the side of the road. A black garbage bag was moving, but not from the wind-it seemed like it was trying to walk!
Taking a picture of the strange sight on her phone, she decided to examine it closer. Opening the bag could have been dangerous, but the woman had no choice. She wanted to know what was inside.
«I saw this package on the road and thought, «Is it moving or am I imagining it?» The closer I got, the clearer it became that it was moving. I didn’t understand anything. There was something alive inside, and I had to get it out,» says Malissa.
She approached, and the mysterious package crawled toward her, sensing that there was someone nearby. Boldly and carefully, Malissa opened it and peered inside, praying that the creature inside the bag was not aggressive.
But to her amazement and shock, there was a tiny beautiful puppy.
He was happy to see her and started wagging his tail, happy to be rescued. The puppy had no collar or other identification, so Malissa took him to work with her and posted an ad on Facebook to find someone who might know more about the discarded little guy.
«If this is your puppy, let me know. If you’re the scoundrel who tied him in a bag and threw him on the road, you’re insane,» she wrote.
After a veterinary exam, it was determined that the puppy was no more than eight months old and was, thankfully, healthy. Whoever did this cruel thing to him by throwing the poor thing in the trash did not beat or injure him.
Malissa quickly became attached to the wonderful puppy and decided to keep him, naming him Hefty.
«We all love him so much. And he loves us and is happy to have found a home. How lucky I was in the right place at the right time and was able to rescue him,» she writes.
Authorities do not know who threw Hefty away, but are investigating the case to find the abuser and bring him to justice. In the meantime, Hefty is perfectly safe with Malissa and her family, and he no longer needs to fear being abandoned.
